Definition and Types

  • Pre - Diabetes

  • TYPE 1 Diabetes

  • TYPE 2 Diabetes

What is Pre - Diabetes?

Prediabetes is an intermediate stage between normal glycaemic levels and diabetes.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

According to the WHO- “Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin.

It is important to note that type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition and alternative medicine like homoeopathy is not an exception to complementary medicine. In such life-threatening situations daily administration of insulin is required.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

According to the WHO- “Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels eyes, kidneys and nerves. The most common is type 2 diabetes, usually in adults, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't make enough insulin.”

Type 2 diabetes affects how your body uses sugar (glucose) for energy. It stops the body from using insulin properly, which can lead to high levels of blood sugar if not treated.

The good news is that this condition is totally reversible in the early stages with slight changes to diet and lifestyle.

What are the Causes of Type 2 Diabetes?

  1. Obesity

  2. Sedentary Lifestyle

  3. Genetic Predisposition

  4. Smoking and Alcoholism

  5. Hypertension and Heart Disease

How is Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosed?

Diabetes is a silent disease which means it has no definitive symptoms, and it progresses gradually, diagnosis is almost always accidental e.g. during routine tests.

Diagnostic Tests for Diabetes-

  • Hemoglobin A1c test (HbA1c)

  • Random Blood Sugar Level

  • Fasting and Post Meal Glucose Test

After Diagnosis the first 1-5 years are very crucial for managing diabetes and to REVERSE this combined approach is necessary. Medication + Lifestyle change.

After 5- 10 years the person is very likely to stay dependant on medication for the rest of their lives to control blood sugar because complications such as Diabetic Neuropathy, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Nephropathy and Cardiovascular complications have likely progressed.

After calculating the BMI, you can check weather your BMI is Underweight, Normal, Overweight or Obese.

One must always target normal BMI although the general health and condition of the person must be kept in mind.

Such a schedule over a long-term cause hormone imbalance and build up into chronic stressors which contribute to disease like diabetes.

Thus, methods of relaxation should be practised daily such as yoga, meditation, walking and any activity that relieves stress such as hobbies.
